“What’s in a name?” said Shakespeare once. Only if he had lived to see the implications a name could have in today’s time. Like any vibrant teen of his age, Ahmed Mohamed carried his personalized, hand-built clock to school with great enthusiasm. Eager to receive praise and admiration from his teachers, Ahmed was in for a shock when his gadget was declared a suspicious device by one of his teachers. What followed next is history!
While the 14-year old had to undergo pressure and embarrassment for a mere engineering creation, what grieves us is the perception that people hold against Muslims. The incident surfaces the increasing distress that Muslims all over the world face today.
The incident caused a mass outrage against the Irish school authorities and the police on social media forums. Ahmed Mohamed has received an outpour of support not only from his fellowmen, but also from tech communities and government officials. Facebook, Google, Twitter, President Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton are a few among the many who have extended their support to the young boy.
While the young teenager is now being referred to as the Muslim Hero America had been waiting for, it is unfortunate that his teachers failed to realize what potential the boy held. However, all’s well that ends well. Ahmed has received considerable recognition and support from people all over the world. This incident has brought to light two essential learning’s– Not all Muslims are terrorists and social media can make you a hero overnight!
Lucky Ahmed, how we wish all kids with his intellect had this privilege to receive the due fame!
