Oculus Rift Will Not Be an Open Platform as Promised
- Oculus Rift
- Open Platform
- Next generation virtual reality
- After originally announcing that Oculus will be an open platform, the management has backtracked to a pre-approved model for the app store
- Each application will be pre-approved by Oculus to appear on the store and they will take a cut of the revenue
To cut it short
The model is familiar to iOS or Android smartphone users. The owner of the store will pre-approve every application and keep a percentage of the revenue.
One of the main reasons behind this limited freedom is that Rift‘s reality experiences need to run at minimum 60 frames per second otherwise the user will feel sick. Oculus is trying to ensure that people’s first experiences with VR are good ones and they are able to garner a loyal following.
